Learn about Jewish heritage in Serbia
Belgrade – Zemun – Novi Sad – Subotica
Belgrade
According to Jewish tradition, Jews lived in Belgrade during the existence of the Jewish state. Therefore, on the second day of the Purim, the Jews of Belgrade read the Book of Estera, respecting the custom prescribed by Mishnah, only for the population of those fortresses that existed during the Jewish state.
Many Belgrade streets proudly bear the names of famous Jews of Belgrade and Serbia, and Jewish Street has been named for more than 300 years.
All of this is only a small part of Belgrade’s rich Jewish heritage.
Zemun
And in the immediate vicinity of Belgrade is Zemun, the city where the idea of Zionism was born. Zemun used to walk the Theodore Herzl’s thyme, Theodore’s grandfather Shimon and grandmother Rivka Herzl were buried in Zemun cemetery.
Zemun is the only European city where both the Sepharian and Ashkenaan communities lived in symbiosis and where they actively cooperated.
That, and many other secrets and stories, are hidden in Zemun’s Jewish heritage.
Novi Sad
The second largest city in Serbia, Novi Sad is a young settlement. It was only created towards the end of the 18th century, on the banks of the Danube. And besides the Serbs, one of the first inhabitants was Jews.
With the development of the city, the Jewish community grew. Novi Sad Jews have left a strong seal in Novi Sad, as witnessed by a magnificent synagogue.
About that, as well as the Jewish football club Judas Maccabi from Novi Sad, and the terrible suffering of Jews and Serbs in the Holocaust, you will find out on our tour and yours.
Subotica
The northernmiest and one of Serbia’s most beautiful cities, Subotica, is a 2-hour drive from Belgrade.
In the very centre stands the most beautiful synagogue in this part of Europe, located in Synagogue Square.
